The «stars» are the words that use every letter, and they're worth a big bonus. It's worth looking for them early.
Use prefixes and suffixes
Many words are formed by adding prefixes (re-, un-, in-, pre-) or suffixes (-tion, -ment, -er, -ing) to a root. Run through them mentally for every root you find.
Use word families
When you find a word, try nearby variants that are also in the dictionary. One idea can lead to several.
Remember letters can be repeated
You can use a letter as many times as you like. That opens up many words with double letters that often get overlooked.
If you get stuck, change tack
Rearrange the letters in your head, or step away and come back with fresh eyes. Words that escaped you before often show up.
